Brazil [Blu-ray]

**** The Blu-ray release of *Brazil* offers a unique treat for fans of Terry Gilliam's surreal and iconic film. This version presents the original 132-minute US theatrical cut, a relic of cinema history that captures the essence of Gilliam's vision prior to outside interference. The film's journey from a nearly two-and-a-half-hour masterpiece to various heavily edited versions has been a point of contention among cinephiles, but this release returns to the roots fans initially embraced. For viewers searching for the exact version they recall from theaters, this Blu-ray satisfies with its full 16X9 anamorphic widescreen presentation, evoking nostalgia while showcasing vivid details that were unseen in previous formats. While the quality of the transfer may leave some purists seeking meticulous restoration—evident through minor dirt and imperfections—many agree that the enhanced audio experience with a DTS-HD Master 5.1 channel compensates for these visual drawbacks. Further, despite the absence of supplementary features like Gilliam's commentary or behind-the-scenes content often found in Criterion releases, the simplicity and nostalgia this release brings cannot be understated. The film itself remains polarizing; its retro-futuristic aesthetic and themes of an overly bureaucratic society continue to resonate, giving audiences food for thought long after the credits roll. As Gilliam's work tends to inspire ardent fans and skeptics alike, this release likely reaffirms or challenges beliefs depending on individual viewer preferences. As outlined by dedicated fans, this Blu-ray is a must-have, especially for those who—like the reviewer—developed an attachment to the film during formative years. Collectively, it solidifies *Brazil* as an enduring piece of cinematic art that rewards exploration through its varied versions. **
