Howard Schwartz (Compiler) Format: Paperback Jewish Editorial Review
This book, Lilith's Cave: Jewish Tales of the Supernatural, is a diverse anthology of Jewish supernatural folklore that spans over one thousand years and originates from France to Persia. The book contains intriguing tales about demons, merchant, Rabbis and Lilith. The forward, written by Howard Schwartz, analyzes the recurring themes through a socio-historical perspective which offers a provocative angle from which to view these stories. The stories are entertaining and great for bedtime reading, but they may start to revolve around the same ideas and can be a little repetitive. Some of the stories are very old and it is great to hear the same stories people told a long time ago. Some readers find the book more funny than horror, and some of the victims got what's coming to them for being an idiot. The Rabbi's negotiating contracts and holding hearings intrigued some readers. The book is fascinating overall and provides insight into Jewish culture, religious beliefs, and practices throughout the ages as well as their occasional Christian influences. The hardcover version of the book contains beautiful illustrations that complement the stories.
