- 1960-1961 academic year: Jacques Derrida, then general philosophy and logic assistant at the Sorbonne, attempts a reading of Alain's sentence “Thinking means no”. This course, consisting of four sessions, allows us to read the bookmarks of an upcoming deconstructionist article. In doing so, it also records “yes no”'s thought, what the thought is basically, and what “means when he says yes, no”. These were questions that provided Derrida with recurring pedagogical footholds in the 1960’s, when thought was at its most enthusiastic in France. The emergence of the pressure you have reveals that these questions are always fundamental to Derrida thought. The same questions remain current today, in an age where it is often difficult to tell what the difference between thought and belief is. Thinking, Saying No, which was hand-written by Derrida during the war of independence of Algeria, the country where he was born, and none of its chapters have been published to date, was completed as a result of years of editorial effort.
